Most patients with life threatening illnesses or injuries (including recent strokes and major heart attacks) are not taken to Trafford General Hospital by ambulance because it doesn’t deal with major trauma cases. Instead patients are taken directly to Salford Royal Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital, or Manchester Royal Infirmary, whichever is deemed most clinically appropriate.

A safe intensive care unit needs to consistently treat a minimum of 200 patients each year. Trafford General Hospital admitted 93 patients for intensive care in 2010/11, which is substantially below the required clinical threshold.
A recent independent assessment of the Trafford Intensive Care Unit, concluded that the number of operations being undertaken were below the number required to maintain the skills of clinicians and the levels of safety.

In 2010/11, 269 Trafford residents had a knee replacement operation, and over half of these were carried out at Trafford General Hospital.
Almost 100 hip replacement operations were also performed on Trafford residents at the hospital.

Under the proposal a new orthopaedic centre (dealing with problems in bones, joints, and ligaments) would be developed using state-of-the-art operating theatres and wards already on the Trafford General site, to deliver inpatient and day case orthopaedic procedures. The vision is for the centre to become a centre of excellence, with expert consultants treating higher numbers of patients and beginning to develop new specialties and new techniques.
